Cabinet Refinishing FAQs
Here at Quality Cabinet Coatings, we get a lot of questions about refinishing your kitchen cabinets. Is refinishing your cabinets worth it? How long does it take? Can your cabinets even be restored?
So, to help all of you homeowners try to figure things out, we’ve answered some of our top cabinet refinishing FAQs. Let’s get into it!
Is Refinishing Cabinets A Good Idea?
Yes! Refinishing your cabinets is almost always a good idea and, in many cases, the best option. This doesn’t just refresh your kitchen cabinets; you can totally change their look, completely reviving them and your whole kitchen.
Can You Refinish Old Cabinets?
Yes! If your old cabinets are in semi-good condition, meaning the only damages are slight blemishes, you can give them brand new life. Plus, restoring them like this regularly can help make them last even longer.
Can You Refinish Pressboard Cabinets?
No. Unfortunately, pressboard cabinets cannot be refinished since there is no actual wood to refinish. Thermofoil cabinets are another type of cabinet that cannot be refinished.
How Many Days Does It Take to Refinish Kitchen Cabinets?
The refinishing process takes 5-10 days, depending on the number of cabinets that need refinishing and any additional work that needs to be done. Of course, hiring a pro ensures the job is done quicker than doing it yourself.
How Hard Is It To Refinish Cabinets?
Refinishing your kitchen cabinets on your own is an extensive job that carries some pretty heavy risks if you don’t know what you’re doing. You could end up completely ruining your cabinets or getting less-than-desirable results. That’s why it’s always best to hire a pro.
What Does Cabinet Refinishing Include?
Cabinet refinishing involves multiple steps, including removing the current finish, cleaning up the base wood, and fixing any minor damages, like scuffs, scrapes, dents, etc. Then, a new finish is put on. In many cases, you can also get brand-new hardware for new-looking cabinets. Learn more about our 8-Step Refinishing Process here.
How Long Does Cabinet Refinishing Last?
If you take good care of the cabinets, refinishing can last up to 15 years. This lasts much longer than cheap pressboard cabinets, which aren’t really fit for a humid kitchen anyway, and definitely longer than plain old painting.
Will I Have Access To My Kitchen During The Refinishing Process?
Your kitchen will likely be off-limits for 2 days for the in-house part of the process. This includes disassembly and, sometimes, sanding. The painting is done in our on-site spray booth, and you will have to steer clear of the team during reassembly.
Can You Refinish Cabinets While They’re Still On The Walls?
No. Cabinets must be taken down and disassembled to be properly refinished. Otherwise, all you can really do is repaint, and even then, the results aren’t as good because this process isn’t nearly as thorough.
